Yet, there I was, saying to my boss, “Sure! I’d be glad to start closing the store at night.”
What was I thinking? Closing the store meant doing those math things I dreaded—counting the days intake, balancing the cash drawer, figuring the deposit—all while holding up the other employees! Where we worked, NO ONE could leave till EVERYONE finished. The first few nights after closing I went out to my car and cried from the anxiety, asking God to help me to somehow do better next time. I loved every other aspect of my job but was it worth the stress?
Thankfully, God knew my heart and provided the help. More experienced employees began sharing tips to make the process go more smoothly. Evenings when I struggled, one of them would offer to take care of part of my duties. Eventually, I could get through it on my own with only occasional glitches.
Have you ever felt incapable or ill-equipped for a task or role you have been asked to fill? Sometimes God’s answer in those situations is to allow others to help us. Remember the battle between the Israelites and the Amalekites? As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites began to win. When Moses' hands grew tired, Aaron and Hur held up his hands--one on each side--so that his hands remained steady till sunset and the Amalekite army was defeated.
There is no shame in asking for the help we need. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”
Be encouraged!
