As the year draws to a close, it’s good to take a few moments to reflect back on the year. Dick and I loved the more than usual family visits but could have done without the extra time spent with doctors and physical therapists. We are thankful for many miles of safe travel for us and loved ones but haven’t appreciated the high fuel prices. Isn’t every year like that—a mixture of ups and downs?
As we look honestly over the last year, its events, and our feelings, can we recognize those blessings we are grateful for and give thanks? Though our bodies sometimes protested what we ask of them, at the end of 2022 we can thank God we are still “upright and taking nourishment.” Admittedly, prices skyrocketed this year, but God provided wisdom and restraint to make it through. When we take the time to look beyond the day to day, we can see the hand of God and realize how much has been given to us!
Likewise, as we reflect, are there words or actions we regret not saying or doing? Are there behaviors we aren’t proud of? Do we recognize the need to ask for forgiveness from God, and perhaps others? I think we all feel this way to some extent.
2023 is just a few days away. Wouldn’t it be uplifting to begin with a fresh start, a clean slate? 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us that when a person puts faith and trust in Christ, they become a new creation. Their old life passes away and they are made new. NO MATTER WHAT OUR PAST HAS BEEN, God can transform us!
Even those who asked Jesus into their life a long time ago can get bogged down by life’s challenges and disappointments. We ALL need a reboot, another chance, the cleansing of forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 promises us if we confess our sins to God, He will keep His promise and do what is right: He will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing.
Sounds like the perfect way to start a new year!
Be encouraged!
