What IS in a name? If it is just a word, not much. However, if I were to speak the name of a friend or relative of yours, immediately you would see them in your mind. A whole gamut of their characteristics, and your feelings about this person, would rise to the surface.
The Bible tells us that the name of Jesus does the same thing. Scriptures declare the effects of the name Jesus.
Matthew 1:21 “You will name him Jesus—because he will save his people from their sins.”
Acts 2:38 “Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven.”
Acts 4:10 “This man stands here before you completely well through the power of the name of Jesus Christ.”
Acts 4:30 “Reach out your hand to heal, and grant that wonders and miracles may be performed through the name of your holy Servant Jesus.”
Acts 16:18 “In the name of Jesus Christ I order you to come out of her!” The spirit went out of her that very moment.”
Philippians 2:10 “In honor of the name of Jesus all beings in heaven, on earth, and in the world below will fall on their knees, and all will openly proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Along with these Bible verses, many songs have been written about the name of Jesus—In Jesus Name, There is Power, Jesus Name Above All Names, Take the Name of Jesus with You, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, All Hail the Power of Jesus Name, His Name is Wonderful, to name a few.
When we realize Who Jesus is and what His name implies, simply speaking or singing Jesus’ name can evoke power, holiness, healing, forgiveness, deliverance, and awe. It’s not in the word itself—life Shakespeare said. It is in our relationship with the One who holds that name. Is there a situation in your life today that needs the name of Jesus?
Be encouraged!
