Jar Lights

I love mason jar fairy lights! I have ordered several sets now from Amazon. They are just jar lids with a strand of lights attached. A small solar panel on top of the lid powers the lights. You stuff the strand down in a mason jar, screw on the lid, flick the switch to on and set the jar in a window that gets lots of sunlight. The lids bask in the sun all day and then, when it gets dark, they automatically turn on and glow for most of the night. How long they shine depends on how long they have spent in the sun.

To look at them unlit, they don’t amount to much. Twenty to thirty teeny tiny bulbs cling to a wire no thicker than dental floss. Yet, these little bits of glass and strings of copper give off a surprising amount of light--enough to walk through a dark hallway!

These simple jar lid lights combine beauty and usefulness in a common, everyday vessel, powered by the light of the sun.

Sound familiar?

In 2 Corinthians 4:6-7 Paul shares, “God said, ‘Let there be light in the darkness.’ God has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.”

We often see ourselves as ordinary and unremarkable, kind of like my plain, glass mason jars that hold my fairy lights. We may not feel versed enough or strong enough to share our faith. We might feel like people can see right through us. But just like my jar lights shine brighter on days they have soaked in lots of sun, the more time we spend with God’s Son, Jesus, the brighter His light can shine from within us. And those watching and listening will know it comes from God.

When we take the time daily to talk with and listen to what God is saying, when we set aside part of our day to read, study, and meditate on God’s Word, we store up light from Heaven. We are filled with God’s goodness, encouragement, kindness, and love—and it can’t help but shine out from us! And isn’t that what we want the world to see? Isn’t God Who we want them to be drawn to? Spend some quality time with Jesus today. He will fill your heart to overflowing with the light of His love and others will benefit from the glow!

Be encouraged!
