Choosing A Leader

Recently, Dick has been filling in at a variety of churches who are in need of a pastor. It’s not an easy process. Even in our denomination, where our pastors are appointment by Bishops, churches are asked to come up with a profile of what type of minister they are looking for.

How do we choose leaders for our churches and other Christian organizations? What should we look for? What qualifications should they possess? What “test” will help guide us to the right decision?

When Moses understood that his time of governance of the Jewish people was ending, he asked God to choose a leader to replace him. Prayer is first and foremost in this process. Prayer for guidance, discernment, and knowledge of God’s will in the matter is crucial. We want to be sure our plans match God’s plans.

God’s choice for Israel was Joshua. When God chooses a leader, are there prerequisites? Skill sets? Personality traits He looks for? What traits did God see that made Joshua the right one to succeed Moses? Looking at the book of Joshua, we can draw a few conclusions on some common qualities to look for in a leader:

A person might be a good leader in the church if they . . .

…know and obey God’s Word. As Joshua picks up the reigns of leadership, God commands him to not only study His Word day and night, but to obey it. (Joshua 1:7-8)

…trust God to follow through. Over and over, armed only with confidence in God’s instructions, Joshua lead Israel in conquering city after city.

…approach situations with a positive outlook. Although Joshua most certainly saw the size and might of those inhabiting the land God wanted the Israelites to occupy, he focused on the opportunities and abundance that this territory offered. (Numbers 14:7)

…are willing to serve whenever and however God calls. When Moses wanted spies to explore the lands ahead, Joshua was among them. (Numbers 13:8) In a battle against the Amalekites, Moses needed men to fight and Joshua gathered a group together. (Exodus 17:9-10) From being one of 12 spies, to organizing a troop of soldiers, to accepting the leadership of a nation, Joshua willingly served wherever God called him.

Just like Joshua, a good leader will possess all these qualities. If we apply these four points as a litmus test the next time we need a strong, Christ-centered leader, we can trust that God will supply us with the very best.

Be encouraged!
