God of Miracles

Over forty years ago I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC). The first medicine I took helped but didn’t completely tame it. I still had to watch what I ate very carefully. High stress from any source brought on UC flares. After about five years, I developed an adverse reaction to the medication and ended up with drug-induced hepatitis. Thankfully, stopping the meds completely reversed the liver damage.

That left me with no options for treatment of UC. I struggled to control it with diet for about eight years. God, in His mercy carried me though, faithful to His promise in Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.”

Then a new drug came out that worked for me! I was exceedingly thankful. My UC went into remission with very few flares—as long as I took my medication faithfully. I could live with that.

About 3 years ago, the price of the drug I was taking jumped from $250 every three months to $1200. The manufacturer was phasing it out in light of so many new treatment options. It had been years since I had a flare and my yearly colonoscopies had shown remission for about five years straight. I decided to try discontinuing the meds.

With my doctor’s approval I gradually was able to stop taking it completely with no adverse effects. He continued to monitor things with yearly scopes and each time the test and biopsies showed remission.

Two weeks ago, I had another colonoscopy. When the doctor came in to talk with Dick and me afterward, he said, “There is no sign of the disease. I took biopsies and we will wait for the results to be sure, but it appears you have been cured of ulcerative colitis. That is very rare.”

This week I got the results of the biopsies. Zero disease! It is truly a miracle! I give God all the praise! Psalm 77:13-14 says “Everything you do, O God, is holy. No god is as great as You. You are the God who works miracles.” Yes, He is!

Thank You, Lord! Your love is amazing!
