The Heart of Worship

According to the dictionary, wor·ship /ˈwərSHəp/ is the feeling or expression of reverence, admiration, and adoration for a deity. Sunday morning church services are most often referred to as “Worship”. We supposedly gather to express our reverence, admiration, and adoration of God. Why, then, do we sometimes lament that we got nothing out of worship?

While I agree that church should encourage us, inspire us, and strengthen our connection with God, are we missing the main ingredient—giving God the love, the acknowledgment, the gratitude He deserves? I think that when we seek to truly worship God, we will end up receiving the encouragement, inspiration, and stronger connection with God that we need.

As I thought about the lyrics of the songs we sing in church, I was dumbfounded by the realization that many focus on what we are looking for FROM God rather than concentrating on what we want to give TO God! We are selfish and needy people, always putting ourselves first. Can’t we set aside that hour on Sunday to give God all the glory He deserves instead?

God is great and is worthy of our praise. Psalm 29 tells us “Ascribe to the LORD, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness.”

This week during the worship service let’s focus our minds and hearts on God, following the command in Psalm 100: “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the LORD is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.”

Let’s come back to the heart of worship, remembering Who it’s all about. When we do, we won’t be leaving church moaning that we got nothing out of it.

Be encouraged!
