An Important Apointment

Outside my window, the darkness is just beginning to fade. Last week’s snow partially melted, revealing trampled blades of grass and last Fall’s final leaves. There are few sounds, no machinery clanging, no emergency vehicles wailing, no doors banging, no overheard voices. Not even the birds or squirrels are awake yet.

I love this quiet time, just me, Watson (our cat), and Jesus. These precious moments, when distractions are few, truly connect me with Him and give me strength for the day. When circumstances pre-empt this opportunity, (which happens from time to time), I feel it the rest of the day; a vague sense of unease or irritability, the impression that I have forgotten or missed something.

I understand why Jesus felt the need to go to desolate places—the wilderness, the mountain, the seashore. He, too, sought quiet conversation with His Heavenly Father early in the morning or at the end of the day.

Our relationship with our fellow human beings offers so much—a helping hand, an encouraging word, companionship, fun. But those same friendships and kinships can drain and exhaust us when what we really need is a little quiet, contemplative time linking up with the One who sees, knows, loves, and listens to the cry of our hearts.

With a cup of tea and my Bible, I can sit in the comfy glider we inherited from a previous owner and just allow my soul to soak in the company of the Holy Spirit. He silently speaks to me through God’s Word and guides my prayers. Like the new day gradually dawning outside my window, I become increasingly more aware of Jesus’ constant and powerful presence. It’s not even a half hour, but it’s the most important appointment of my day.

Even Jesus, the Son of God, needed time alone to renew and recharge and refocus. We can benefit from carving a few moments out of our day to do the same.

Be encouraged!
