"God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day—a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home." (Ephesian 2: 19-22 The Message)
Ephesians 2 compares how God is building His Kingdom—the place where He is at home—with the process of constructing a house. Have you ever watched a house being built? Every day more workers come to do their part. The people who run the backhoe to clear the land are not the same ones who pour the concrete for the foundation. Those who place the roof decking are not the same ones who install the plumbing. The one who attaches the spouting coordinates with the one who laid the shingles, so the roof doesn’t leak.
Similarly, in building the place where God lives, every believer has a part. 1 Corinthians 12 explains how the Spirit give each person gifts necessary to build and maintain the Body of Christ. We all have a part to contribute. We are all bound together, each a brick laid upon the cornerstone of Jesus, housing the place where God lives.
I am a part of that place where God lives, as are all believers. While what I do may seem minor to me, it is important to the building of God’s kingdom. A simple conversation with a neighbor can help them see God in a new way. A down-to-earth prayer with a friend in the hospital can open a channel for them to communicate with Jesus.
Today, how can you help build the place where God lives—the place where others can find forgiveness, refuge, comfort? Whatever the task, do it with all your heart, knowing you are working for the Lord. (Colossians 3:23-24)
