Look at the Birds

“Look at the birds of the air!” Matthew 6:26

The last few weeks our neighborhood has had many opportunities to “look at the birds”. We have been visited by a flock of starlings and a flock of robins that seem to want to just hang around rather than flying further south. As the temperatures have dropped to below freezing, water has become increasingly hard for them to find, so, I have been putting multiple containers of water out for them, dumping the ice and refilling them several times a day.

It only takes about one minute for the first robin or starling to discover there is fresh, unfrozen water. And within a few minutes there are ten to fifteen birds on the porch sipping water like it’s 100 degrees outside!

As I watched this phenomenon repeat day after day, I felt God whisper the verse from Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before people, that they see what you do and give glorify to God.”

It only takes one bird to find the water and soon scores of them flock gratefully to the bowls I put out. Shouldn’t our lives—how we act, what we say, the attitude we bring to situations—attract others to God? Shouldn’t there be a chain reaction among those we encounter linking them to the Source of our actions, our words, and our responses to challenges?

The old song, “Pass It On”, says “it only takes a spark to get a fire going.” We can be the spark that lights in others the fire of desire to know God—IF we consciously give Him the glory, letting others know it is Jesus who sustains us, motivates us, and carries us through.

People are thirsty for hope, for forgiveness, for direction, for a lifting of their burdens—and we hold the Cup of Water that can quench that thirst—Jesus! Won’t you pass it on by living as He would want you to live, by telling others of His love and mercy, by praying for those who don’t yet know Him?

Be encouraged!
