The Bridge

Recently we hiked at a local state park where several bridges provide opportunities for creek crossings. Without those bridges, thick brush, slippery rock bed, wetlands, and chilly waters would force hikers to turn back at the many places where the creek winds through the park. Travelers would miss out on all the beauty that lies just on the other side of each bridge.

Bridges connect where separation formerly existed—whether it be places, experiences, ideologies, status, etc. They create a way across impasses and obstacles, giving access to what is otherwise inaccessible.

In many ways, Jesus became a bridge between us and God. Sin stood immovably obstructing our path to God. There was no way over, around, or through it—until Jesus died on the cross to make that way possible—to bridge the gap between us and God.

God’s plans for the bridge were made at the beginning of time, and the abutments poured 33 years before the Crucifixion. The bridge Jesus built gains us access to God the Father. Jesus said of himself, “I am the Way.” (John 14:6)

Now we no longer need to miss the beauty that awaits on the other side of eternity! Through no efforts of our own, God has given us access to Him and His Kingdom. We don’t have to fight our way to God! “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) Jesus provided the bridge of grace we needed over the river of sin in our lives.

Be encouraged!
